Columbus is a quiet film. a patient film. like its cinematography, a cinematography that lingers on perfectly framed architecture set amidst the lush green of the title’s city, the story is perfectly balanced. a father-son, mother-daughter story. and those stories of family and loss and coping are balanced again by the visual story of finding solace in art. of connecting with art on a very personal level. architecture shapes our spaces, helps us to live within space in a rich and meaningful way. Kogonada, the director, uses his pacing and camera to help us live within his story, even if only for a short time, in a similar manner. like the characters and their varying relationships to the city of Columbus, we want to both remain with this film and go out and live, with eyes newly trained.
